Venice is often considered the romantic capital of the world, and it is also the capital of the Veneto region in north east Italy.
The scenery from movies and the sultriness of the buildings all add to the experience. Evocative names like the Rialto Bridge, the Grand Canal and St Marks square become a reality as soon as you arrive in Venice.
In the Spring and Summer, Venice is buzzing with tourists, but you can easily escape down the side streets away from St Marks square to find a secluded café or restaurant. The boutiques and shops range from those of designer brands, to small gift shops and ‘news agents’ selling postcards.
The famous venetian masks worn during the Carnevale (Carnival of Venice) can be found in abundence at very reasonable prices.
A trip to Venice wouldn’t be complete without a Gondala ride. There is no better way of seeing Venice via the canals. The average cost is between 80-100 Euros (prices at 2011).
The whole family will find something of interest, the gondolas, St Marks Square and Cathedral and the shops, with plenty of nice places to eat, drink and relax.
Venice is served by the Marco Polo International airport on the mainland within the Veneto region.
